The Objective

This project was an assignment for my Visual Communications class. For this project, demonstration of good visual layout, appropriate typography choices, grids, and document alignment was required. The focus was not on the art and story production, but since I had an artistic background, I was able to showcase my drawing abilities in this assignment.

The Process

As with other projects, the first step after planning is content production. I own a digital drawing tablet, so I produced all my drawings there. I haven’t been drawing digitally for a long time, and I am still experimenting with different techniques. Traditional drawing with pencil and paper will always be my favourite, but digital drawings are much more accessible and higher quality.

After completing my drawings, I created the grids and boxes needed for the template of each page. By using the align and grid tools in Adobe InDesign, I was able to easily finish my templates. To add the drawings, I simply had to place them into each box. My font choice aligns with graphic novel and cartoon font types. I looked around the web for free font resources that would go nicely with the theme of my graphic novel.

Creating a graphic novel has always been something I wanted to do, and it was very fun. I plan on creating more when I have free time, because producing a graphic novel incorporates two of my favourite things—graphic design and art.
