The Objective
This was a team project with the objective of utilizing an original creative concept to create a recruitment program for SAIT’s New Media Production and Design(NMPD) program. For this project, I had worked mostly on web development while contributing to some graphic work.
The Process
My team’s creative concept was inspired by Harry Potter and the world of magic and wizardry. We decided to portray new media as magic, because we noticed many aspects of new media production is similar to magic. In graphic design, the magic is in the ability to create new things. For photography and editing, enhancing photos and correcting them is a magic itself. The talent and abilities related to new media is endless and powerful, so we wanted to use magic as a representation for it. To keep our creative concept from being a copy of the Harry Potter world, we went with a more modern and technologic theme for magic. This is also very suitable for new media, because new media revolves around technology and the digital world.
By using magic to represent new media and the NMPD program at SAIT, we created a website that would attract potential high school students to join the program. Our goal was to entice students to join the program by showing them how they would be able to create and control magic of their own. Our landing page is an invitation letter to join NMPD, and once the student accepts the invitation, they are taken to the website’s main page. On the main page, we have our teaser or trailer that shortly presents the possibilities and opportunities available in the NMPD program. The goal of the teaser is to further spark interest in students.
The rest of the site consists mostly of individual pages that present a different category or course within the NMPD program: graphic design, photography, video production, and web design and development. Each category has its own feature video that quickly showcases a related “magic” ability. Each category also includes instructor photos that are animated as well as an infographic displaying the related abilities, masteries, and skills.
The last page of the website is a sorting quiz. The sorting quiz is inspired by the Harry Potter sorting hat that sorts students into one of the four Hogwarts houses. We decided to recreate the sorting hat as a quiz on our website, and the quiz sorts students into a “house” categorized by the four categories mentioned earlier: graphic design, photography, video production, and web design and development. The sorting quiz offers more interactivity within our website which creates more interest and attention for our recruitment program.
